Our current unit is All About Clothing and thanks to the cold winter weather we have had lots to talk about! The first week we spent reading Shirley Neitzel's, The Jacket I wear in the Snow and Jonathan London's Froggy Gets Dressed. These books helped us to review all the different types of clothes that we can wear. We then focused on the features of clothing including: buttons, hoods, zippers, shoelaces, snaps, buckles, sleeves and pockets. The children all absolutely loved Pete the Cat and His Groovy Buttons and Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes. They also enjoyed watching these youtube video readings of the books http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKVLeH-nZzs and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2YwCgtvnNg Throughout this unit we have been targeting fine motor skills by practicing zippering our coats, snapping and buttoning our pants and coats. These are great fine motor skills that can also be targeted at home by spending a few extra minutes working on dressing and undressing a day.
