This week the students learned how to take care of clothes. They had fun washing doll clothes by hand. They first filled up a bucket with water, put the soap in, washed the clothes, and hung them up to dry. We read Henry Helps with Laundry by Beth Bracken and sang The Washing Machine Song by Jim Gill. Our current unit is All About Clothing and thanks to the cold winter weather we have had lots to talk about! The first week we spent reading Shirley Neitzel's, The Jacket I wear in the Snow and Jonathan London's Froggy Gets Dressed. These books helped us to review all the different types of clothes that we can wear. We then focused on the features of clothing including: buttons, hoods, zippers, shoelaces, snaps, buckles, sleeves and pockets. The children all absolutely loved Pete the Cat and His Groovy Buttons and Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes. They also enjoyed watching these youtube video readings of the books http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKVLeH-nZzs and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2YwCgtvnNg Throughout this unit we have been targeting fine motor skills by practicing zippering our coats, snapping and buttoning our pants and coats. These are great fine motor skills that can also be targeted at home by spending a few extra minutes working on dressing and undressing a day. Green Bay Early Childhood Center had a blast celebrating CRAZY HAT DAY on Friday. The students had fun trying on different hats. They sorted the hats by various categories. We also read the book, Caps For Sale. Next Friday (1/24/14) is crazy sock day! Focus: This month our class will be learning all about CLOTHING! We will be working on identifying, sorting, and matching articles of clothing. The children will use their self-help skills to gain more independence with dressing themselves. They will also practice dressing dolls. A zipper club will help motivate the children to flip their coats over their heads and zip up (flip and zip!). Hopefully you can use this at home! The class will also have fun washing articles of clothing in the sensory table. During our clothing unit, our school will participate in SPIRIT FRIDAYS! Please see below. Core Concepts: Week 1 (Jan 8-10) What is clothing? Week 2 (Jan. 13-17) What are the features of clothing? Week 3 (Jan. 21-24) How can we make and take care of clothing? The LEAP class and Mrs. Burgo's class put on our very first assembly at Green Bay School. We had so much fun practicing with Mrs. Burgo's AM and PM class. We were able to practice both our English and Spanish language skills. The children did such a wonderful job and they were so proud of themselves! We look forward to watching the other classes perform in the months to follow! Please see the attached link that gave us the inspiration for our jungle theme. YouTube: Walking in the Jungle Super Simple Learning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoSq-yZcJ-4 We have had so much fun learning about construction! The children have been hard at work using their imagination and creativity to build in our classroom. They have enjoyed dressing up, using tools, and building houses, bridges, towers, and train tracks. In preparation for Thanksgiving we have been discussing what everyone in the class is thankful for and decided to use the holiday to say thank you to all of the great staff in our building. As a class we made pumpkin pudding and delivered it to the different administrators around Green Bay. The children also told us the different things they are thankful for including their families, pets, toys, the playground and school. The staff in LEAP wishes you and your families a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving! We have been lucky enough to have one of the Reading Buddies, Quincy and his owner Becky, visit our class every other week. All of the students love petting and hugging Quincy. Quincy helps during circle, in the library and even takes walks with the class. We are so lucky to have Quincy and Becky in our room! You're Invited!
